Cattle rustlers Robert Hightower (John Wayne), Pedro "Pete" Rocafuerte (Pedro Armendáriz), and William Kearney (Harry Carey, Jr.) rob a bank in the town of Welcome, Arizona, but William is shot in the shoulder and they have to flee into the desert, pursued by a posse led by Sheriff Buck Sweet (Ward Bond), who shoots a hole in their water bag (that they do not notice until after all the water has leaked out.

They eventually lose their horses in a desert sandstorm and end up walking. Desperate for water, they head for a water hole, which has, however, been destroyed by the misguided efforts of a bumbling tenderfoot, who then chased after his lifestock and did not return. In his covered wagon left nearby lies his wife (Sheriff Sweet's niece), who is about to give birth. With the help of the trio, she has a boy, whom she names Robert William Pedro after her benefactors. Before dying, she extracts a promise from them that they will take care of him. Moved, the three desperadoes try to keep their promise despite te acute lack of water. William is certain a higher power guided them there and likens their situation to the Three Magi finding the baby Jesus in a manger. He convinces the others to head for the town of New Jerusalem, which lies across a wide expanse of desert....

Reap The Wild Wind

At 2.30pm REAP THE WILD WIND (1942) (123 Minutes-Colour) Starring John Wayne, Ray Milland, Paulette Goddard, Susan Hayward, Loretta Young, Robert Preston and Raymond Massey. Directed by Cecil B. DeMille

Rival sea captains, a hurricane, and a giant red squid are just a few of the attractions on display in Reap the Wild Wind (1942), a typically lavish Cecil B. DeMille production, which won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. The story, which is set in the Florida Keys, pits Loxi Claiborne (Paulette Goddard), the owner of a ship salvage operation, against the dishonest Cutler brothers (Raymond Massey, Robert Preston) who are suspected of causing schooners to wreck just so they can salvage them.

Joining forces with Loxi temporarily are Captain Jack Stuart (John Wayne) and Stephen Tolliver (Ray Milland), a Charleston lawyer investigating a recent ship salvage. As expected, Stuart and Tolliver soon become rivals for Loxi's affections and their conflict sets the stage for a tragic turn of events. The film is unusual among films starring John Wayne. Foremost, it is one of relatively few films in which he plays a character with a notable dark side. He had second thoughts about signing on since he was unsure how his fans would react to him being bested by a "foppish" Ray Milland.
