Wake Of The Red Witch (1949) - Showing at 11.00am

At 11.00am –
WAKE OF THE RED WITCH
  – (1949) (106 Minutes-Black & White) During the 1860s, the mighty Red Witch sails the South Pacific under the ruthless command of its skipper, Capt. Ralls. One day, Ralls decides to "scuttle," or intentionally ground the ship, which is carrying five million dollars in gold bullion. Ralls orders his assistant, Antonio "Ripper" Arrezo, to lock the navigator, Loring, inside his cabin while he drives the ship onto a reef. When it sinks, the crew abandons ship. Later, First Mate Sam Rosen, Ripper and Capt. Ralls are called before a court of inquiry, at which Loring testifies that Mayrant Ruysdaal Sidneye, whose trading company, Batjak, owned the ship, had sent Ralls an order relieving him of his duties. When questioned, Ralls lies, saying that he never received the message. Sidneye's brother, who is one of the judges at the inquest, asks Ralls how he managed to be rescued so quickly, only twelve hours after the wreck, but before he can answer, a messenger arrives with word that Sidneye has withdrawn his complaint.

Shortly before his death in 1979, Barbara Walters interviewed John Wayne at him home in Newport Beach, CA, and he said that he enjoyed this film more than most. (After all, he named his production company, BATJAC, after the Trading Company in the film.)The story is a haunting tale of a lost but worthy relationship between sea captain John Wayne and his found love, Gail Russell that works brilliantly right until the end.

12.45pm Lunch Time and Memorabilia Room Open until 2.15pm Raffle Prize Draw

Big Jake (1971) - Showing at 2.30pm

At 2.30pm BIG JAKE (1971)(110 Minutes– Colour) Starring John Wayne, Richard Boone, Maureen O’Hara, Patrick Wayne, Christopher Mitchum, Bruce Cabot, Bobby Vinton, Harry Carey Jr., Jim Davis and Glenn Corbett-Directed by George Sherman. TO BE SHOWN IN HIGH DEFINITION.

Big Jake, released in 1971, is one of many westerns that ride the trail blazed by The Searchers, the 1956 classic by John Ford that some critics consider the genre's all-time-greatest film. Again the hero is played by John Wayne, and again he's a tumbling tumbleweed of a man who rediscovers family values when deadly marauders snatch an innocent child away from his kinfolk. There are major differences, though. This time the victim is a boy instead of a girl, the journey to find him lasts for days instead of years, and the villains are kidnappers demanding a huge ransom - the picture's working title was The Million Dollar Kidnapping - rather than Comanche warriors who induct the stolen youngster into their tribe.

All this is filmed according to tried-and-true western conventions, accompanied by an Elmer Bernstein score that utilises almost every musical formula associated with Wild West movies. The movie was also a reunion in other ways. One of Wayne's real-life sons, Michael, produced it; another one, Patrick, plays James McCandles, hero Jake McCandles's rebellious son; and a much younger Wayne offspring, Ethan-named after the Searchers hero--plays Little Jake McCandles, the kidnapped kid. Talk about family values! On top of this, Robert Mitchum's son Christopher plays Big Jake's better-behaved son, Michael, and Maureen O'Hara lends an extra touch of class as Martha McCandles, the hero's estranged but secretly affectionate wife.
